I had just completed 9 months of gruelling treatment for breast cancer, and was really struggling. Rather than losing weight on chemotherapy, I was on such a high dose of steroids that I gained several stone. By the time I had surgery (including removal of all my underarm lymph nodes) followed by extensive radiotherapy I was physically and mentally at a very low ebb.

I was huge – blown up with weight and water. I was very weak from the chemo and this made moving around even more difficult – the double whammy of extra weight and less strength.

At the beginning of my illness I had promised that I would walk the Moonwalk (26.2 miles) in May 2011 to raise money for breast cancer. This was really an act of faith as I had no idea whether I would even be here by then.

Before cancer I was the duffer at sport. All of my family are very sporty, and this served to drive me even further away from taking exercise – I was embarrassed to be so inept compared to them.

Ben has been absolutely wonderful over the last 5 months. Not only has he prepared me for my walk, which I completed successfully in mid-May, but gradually my spirits have lifted and I feel as if I am coming back to myself. I would never have believed 6 months ago that things could turn around for me so quickly. Physically I am so much stronger, and Ben has worked hard on improving mobility in my right arm which has been poor following the op. He checked with my breast care team to establish exactly what I could and couldn’t do and that is a measure of his professionalism.

Without Ben’s encouragement and reassurance I certainly could not have done the Moonwalk, but in fact I dread to think what state I would be in by now. I feel more confident about my physical abilities and even proud of what I can achieve, and the very dark days are few and far between now. Ben, you saved my life – thank you so much.

Ben not only devises a personal fitness regime tailored to the individual, he also makes it fun, challenging and diverse. I’ve been thrilled with the results. Without his help I wouldn’t have completed the 2011 London Marathon. Ben was completely unfazed by my wish to run in the Marathon at short notice (8 weeks) after a servere bout of flu and suffering from whiplash! He adapted my training programme around my good days and bad days as well as making sure I ate well and rested between sessions. I’ve enjoyed training with Ben so much that I have decided to take on more running challenges, so I’ll definitely be continuing my training with Ben for the foreseeable future.

I used to be a very active, healthy and slim person until five years ago, when depression hit me so hard that I disappeared into a very deep black hole. I picked up weight and went from a size 12 to a size 18 dress size in only five years. My fitness levels disappeared to nothing. I have since been on anti-depressants for the last five years.

I needed to get some exercise and change my lifestyle to help me get healthy again but I just did not have the motivation to go to the gym. I found the idea of joining the gym very daunting because I had such a low self esteem. I knew that I had to do something and one day I saw an advert in my local newspaper about Ben: a personal trainer offering one on one personal training sessions in the privacy of my home. I made the call.

I was really nervous because I did not know what to expect, but the minute I met Ben he put me at ease with his warm and spontaneous personality. Our initial meeting was just to find out about my medical history and to assess what I was capable of and what I was comfortable with doing.

I was initially only planning to signing up with him for a 20 session block to get myself fitter and healthier, but after just 10 sessions I had seen such a significant change in my cardiovascular fitness and body shape, that I realised just why it is so important to have a personal trainer. Ben designed a workout programme which he changes and adapts by introducing new exercises all the time so that the training sessions do not become monotonous. He also makes sure that the exercise programme is tailored to any injuries or medical problems that I have. Fitness is now an enjoyable part of my life, rather than a chore and I even look forward to the training sessions. I now have boundless energy and I understand how my body and energy levels react to different foods. I have also lost weight and I have gone down one dress size. Ben’s advice on diet and nutrition have made a big difference to the way I eat and although I am not on a diet, I have become much more aware of the kind of food I have to avoid and the kind of food that is really good for me. I have noticed improvement and changes to some of the medical problems I had before because of these changes.

However the best result of all is that my doctor is so pleased with the mental improvement in me, that we are now working towards coming off the anti depressants. I can only thank Ben for this. He was faced with a forty something woman who felt like giving up on ever getting better again, but he did not let me. I have now been training with Ben for five months. He is a master of his craft and a treasure trove of health and fitness knowledge. Ben is now a permanent part of my life and we train twice a week for an hour each session.

I cannot recommend him highly enough. I will keep on training with him for as long as I can put one foot in front of the other.
